The name Hellaby comes from “Helgebi”, names ending in the letters "bi" relates to a Scandinavian (Norse) influence. Therefore Hellaby traditonally means the farmland belonging to Helge. Hellaby Hall can be associated with a rather grand history though there are contrasting reports as to the accuracy of some facts. However, it is widely known that Hellaby was a deserted medieval village with some reports that it was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as being within the Parish of Stainton, along with the nearby village of Maltby. It is recorded that in 1688 Ralph Fretwell of Hellaby commenced the building of Hellaby Hall in it's current form aling with farm and cottages. This was completed in 1692, the Hall was designed in the Jacobean style; the front facade can still be seen today.
